Email password recovery: a safe starting point

The mailbox provider controls account recovery. Independent assistance can explain the process, but cannot bypass identity verification or guarantee access to an account.

Start at the provider’s own sign-in page

Type the provider’s known address yourself or follow a verified official help link. Select its forgotten-password option and enter the exact mailbox address. A misspelled address can look like a missing account.

Work through the offered recovery options

  1. Use a recovery phone, recovery email or other method already registered to the account.
  2. Enter verification codes yourself. Do not read them to a caller or send them in a support email.
  3. If the old recovery method is unavailable, use the provider’s alternative recovery flow.
  4. After access is restored, review recovery details, signed-in devices, forwarding and mailbox filters.

When the website works but an app does not

This may be an app-authorization issue rather than a forgotten password. Check whether the app needs OAuth, an app password or a provider-specific secure mail key before resetting the main password again.

A provider may limit recovery options or decline a request. No independent service can override that decision.

Explore provider-specific guides for official configuration references.
