Start with the right service
Start with webmail when AOL Mail stops syncing. A working browser inbox tells you the account can sign in; the remaining problem may be the email app, its authorization, or its connection settings. AOL Mail and AOL Desktop Gold are different products, so identify which one shows the error.

Work through the problem
- Open AOL Mail through AOL’s own website and send a short test message to an address you control.
- If webmail works but a desktop app asks repeatedly for a password, update the app and review AOL’s third-party sign-in instructions. Use a provider-generated app password only when AOL instructs you to.
- Compare incoming and outgoing settings with AOL Help. A receiving problem and a sending problem can have different causes.
- Before removing an account, preserve any folders or messages stored only on that device.
Keep a useful diagnostic record
Note the exact error, the application and version, and whether the same account works on the provider’s website. Record whether sending, receiving or sign-in fails. Remove private message content from screenshots before sharing them.
If you use POP or local folders, preserve those messages before removing an account. A new account configuration may not recover data stored only on the old device.
